Two decades of dance, art, and community building in the Twin Cities.

The Journey

Two Decades of Dance, Art & Community

2004

Chicago-Style Steppin’ Comes to Minnesota

Kevin Johnson brought top national dance instructors to the Twin Cities, formally introducing the community to Chicago-style eight-count stepping. The Twin Cities Steppers Association (TCSA) was established as a nonprofit organization dedicated to dance education and cultural programming.

2006

National Recognition

Kevin’s expertise and dedication earned national coverage in Inside Steppin’ Magazine. He was invited to teach, judge, and perform at stepping events across the Midwest, including Milwaukee’s largest stepping competitions.

2008

Promoter of the Year

The National Promoters Gala and Entertainment Expo recognized TCSA as Promoter of the Year for steppers sets and special events. Kevin also appeared on the Michael Baisden Show, introducing Chicago-style stepping to new audiences nationwide.

2010s

Expanding the Mission

TCSA broadened its programming to include salsa workshops, art exhibitions, and community outreach. The Twin Cities Salsa Explosion became a signature annual event, and partnerships grew with local organizations and cultural institutions.

2020s

The Music & Movement Festival Is Born

Building on nearly two decades of community programming, the Twin Cities Music & Movement Festival launched as a free, outdoor celebration at Western Sculpture Garden Park. Supported by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and the Minnesota State Arts Board, the festival brings together live music, dance, art, food vendors, and thousands of attendees from across the region.

2026

Bigger, Bolder, Better

The festival enters a new era with a dedicated website, expanded sponsor partnerships, and a growing national reputation. New programming includes the Celebrating the Sistahs initiative and deeper community engagement year-round.

Special Program

Celebrating the Sistahs

“Celebrating the Sistahs” is a signature TCSA initiative that honors the women who shape and strengthen our communities. This special event recognizes the trailblazers, mentors, artists, and leaders who inspire through their work, creativity, and dedication to uplifting others.

Through live tributes, spoken word, music, and community storytelling, Celebrating the Sistahs creates a powerful space for recognition, gratitude, and sisterhood. The event has become a beloved tradition within the Twin Cities Steppers community and a highlight of the festival season.
